Whether it's a knock to the head on the sports field, a car accident, or even a simple fall, concussions can affect more than just your ability to think clearly — they can also impact how you see the world.

At Tomlinson Optometrists, we’re passionate about helping patients recover from visual disturbances caused by concussions, and one of the most effective tools we offer is syntonic phototherapy, or light therapy. But first, let’s understand the basics.

What is a concussion?

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head. It can occur during contact sports like rugby or hockey, in road accidents or from everyday falls. Although called "mild," the effects can be serious and long-lasting – especially when it comes to vision.

Common symptoms of a concussion

Many people are surprised to learn how often vision problems arise after a concussion. You may experience:

·       Blurred or double vision

·       Difficulty focusing or tracking objects

·       Sensitivity to light

·       Headaches and eye strain

·       Difficulty with balance and coordination

·       Brain fog and memory issues

·       Fatigue during reading or screen time

These symptoms can persist long after the initial injury if left untreated, and they often interfere with daily activities like school, work, or driving.

The visual connection

Vision involves much more than just the eyes – it’s a complex process that depends on how the brain interprets what we see. A concussion can disrupt these pathways, particularly affecting how your eyes move and work together. This is why standard eye tests may appear normal, even if you're struggling to see clearly after a head injury.

Enter: Syntonic Phototherapy

Syntonic phototherapy, or light therapy, is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of coloured light to stimulate the visual pathways in the brain and improve overall function. Patients undergoing this therapy sit in a darkened room and look at a light with specialised, coloured filters for 20 minutes per session. Over time (usually 20 to 30 sessions), the therapy works to balance the autonomic nervous system and enhance visual processing.

Why use syntonic phototherapy for concussions?

Syntonic phototherapy has shown remarkable results in helping patients recover from concussion-related vision issues. It works by:

Reducing visual stress – Light therapy helps calm overstimulated visual pathways, especially in patients with light sensitivity.

Improving visual tracking and focus – Many patients experience faster, more comfortable eye movements after therapy.

Enhancing brain function – By rebalancing the nervous system, phototherapy supports better cognitive performance and quicker mental recovery.

Reducing headaches and fatigue – Patients often report fewer visual-triggered headaches and increased stamina with reading and screen use.

It’s safe, gentle, and suitable for both children and adults — especially those still experiencing symptoms weeks or months after a concussion.

When should you book an appointment?

If you or your child has experienced a concussion and are still feeling “off,” even after a normal eye test, it may be time for a functional vision evaluation. Some signs to look out for include:

·       Trouble concentrating at school or work

·       Irritability or mood changes

·       Dizziness or nausea during visual tasks

·       Sensitivity to busy environments

·       Reading difficulties or skipping lines.

At Tomlinson Optometrists, our behavioural optometrists can assess your visual system in detail and recommend an appropriate treatment plan – including syntonic phototherapy, if needed.

 OCT Scan

An OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) scan offers a non-invasive, detailed view of your eye health, helping to detect, prevent, and manage vision problems early. Using light waves, OCT captures high-resolution, cross-sectional images of the retina, optic nerve, and other crucial eye structures. This advanced technology allows optometrists to detect conditions like glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and more — often before any noticeable symptoms occur.
