9 Common eye disorders: symptoms and treatment

Writer: Esna van der WaltEsna van der Walt

Our eyes play a vital role in our daily lives, allowing us to experience the world around us. However, various eye disorders can impact our vision and overall eye health. Understanding common eye conditions, their symptoms, and available treatments can help you take proactive steps toward maintaining clear and healthy vision.

1. Nearsightedness (Myopia)

Symptoms:  Distant objects appear blurry due to light focusing in front of the retina, squinting, headaches and difficulty seeing far away.

Treatment: Prescription eyeglasses, contact lenses or LASIK surgery.

2. Farsightedness (Hyperopia)

Symptoms: Nearby objects appear blurry as light focuses behind the retina, eye strain, headaches and trouble reading.

Treatment: Prescription spectacles or contact lenses.

3. Astigmatism

Symptoms: Blurred or distorted vision at all distances due to an irregularly shaped cornea or lens. Difficulty seeing fine details and night vision problems.

Treatment: special eyeglasses, contact lenses or LASIK surgery.

4. Dry Eye Syndrome

Symptoms: Gritty or burning sensation, redness, excessive tearing, and sensitivity to light.Treatment: Artificial tears, prescription eye drops, and lifestyle changes like drinking more water, humidity indoors and taking breaks from screen time can help manage dry eye symptoms.

5. Cataracts

Symptoms: Cloudy or blurred vision, glare sensitivity, difficulty seeing at night, and faded colours.

Treatment: In early stages, stronger lighting and prescription glasses may help. Eventually, cataract surgery is needed to remove the clouded lens and replace it with a clear artificial one.

6. Glaucoma

Symptoms: Gradual loss of peripheral vision, eye pain, halos around lights, and blurred vision.Treatment: Prescription eye drops, oral medications, and surgical procedures can help reduce intraocular pressure and slow the progression of vision loss.

7. Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Symptoms: Blurred central vision, difficulty reading, and dark or empty areas in your sight.Treatment: While there is no cure, lifestyle changes, dietary supplements, and medical injections may slow progression. Regular eye exams are crucial for early detection.

8. Diabetic Retinopathy

Symptoms: Floating spots, blurred vision, and vision loss in severe cases.Treatment: Managing blood sugar levels, laser treatment, and injections can help slow progression and prevent further vision impairment.

9. Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)

Symptoms: Redness, itching, swelling, and discharge from the eyes.Treatment: Depending on the cause (bacterial, viral, or allergic), treatment may include antibiotic drops, antihistamines, or home remedies like cold compresses.

 OCT Scan

An OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) scan offers a non-invasive, detailed view of your eye health, helping to detect, prevent, and manage vision problems early. Using light waves, OCT captures high-resolution, cross-sectional images of the retina, optic nerve, and other crucial eye structures. This advanced technology allows optometrists to detect conditions like glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and more — often before any noticeable symptoms occur.
